Equine Body Condition Score (Henneke Scale)Equine

Assess body condition score (BCS) in horses using the Henneke 9-point scale. Evaluates six anatomical areas — neck, withers, behind the shoulder, ribs, loin/back, and tailhead — to determine if a horse is underweight, in ideal condition, or obese. Developed by Don Henneke at Texas A&M University, this standardized scoring system works across all breeds without specialized equipment. Each area is scored 1 (poor/emaciated) to 3 (fleshy/obese) for a simplified assessment. Used for nutritional evaluation, weight management, breeding soundness (mares should be 5-7 for optimal fertility), equine metabolic syndrome screening, Cushing disease monitoring, pre-purchase examination, and rescue/neglect cases. Common queries: horse body condition, equine BCS, is my horse too thin, horse obesity assessment, Henneke score.
