ASA Physical Status Classification

ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) Physical Status Classification adapted for veterinary anesthesia. Classifies patients from ASA I (normal healthy animal) through ASA V (moribund, not expected to survive without surgery). Includes optional E modifier for emergency procedures. Dogs classified ASA III, IV, and V are 3.4, 7.1, and 18.8 times more likely to develop severe perianesthetic complications than ASA I-II patients. Used for pre-anesthetic risk assessment, surgical planning, anesthesia protocol selection, client communication about anesthetic risk, and perioperative monitoring level determination. Common queries: 'anesthesia risk for my dog' or 'pre-anesthetic classification'.

Select the classification that best describes the patient

Add E modifier if the procedure is an emergency (delay would increase threat to life)
